Room 13, an inexplicable but persistent phobia

There are many superstitions associated with the number 13. It is no secret that for most, the number 13, according to commonly held beliefs, brings bad luck. Worse still, many hotel customers suffer from a phobia of the number 13, which is sometimes referred to as thirteen-phobia.

The number 13 is considered by many cultures to be a sign of bad luck, which largely explains the lack of rooms with this number in hotels. The superstition associated with the number 13 has its roots in the Christian religion. It refers to the meal of the Last Supper, when the twelve apostles gather around Jesus. Judas, who turns out to have been a traitor and handed Jesus over to the Roman authorities, was the thirteenth disciple seated at the table of the Last Supper. From then on, the number 13 became an unfortunate number: 13 guests at the table is a dark omen for many.

In addition, the number 13 is associated with death on divination tarot cards, further explaining that in popular culture this number can be considered an unlucky talisman!

The curse of the number 13 was often mentioned in the case of the Apollo 13 mission. The rocket took off at 13:13 from platform 39 (13 × 3), then exploded in flight a few minutes after the loss!

Popular beliefs about the number 13 bringing bad luck have generalised to many aspects of our society: many streets do not have the number 13, airlines, such as Air France, remove all rows of 13, and there is no car number 13 in Formula 1. Interestingly, in some countries, the thirteenth floor of some buildings is named 12a or 12bis!

Handing over the keys to room thirteenth guest is virtually impossible today. There is a very high probability that he will refuse or perceive it as an unpleasant gesture. Even if he dares not say anything, he runs the risk of being less satisfied with his stay. To avoid this kind of discussion and inconvenience, most hotels in the world do not have room 13!
