2-Star Hotel - What requirements does an accommodation have to meet to be awarded 2 stars?

When choosing a hotel, the number of stars is often the first criterion we look at. The more stars there are, the higher the standard of accommodation and the wider the range of facilities available. This system, although indicative, helps travellers to choose a hotel that suits their needs and expectations. A 2-star hotel is an excellent choice for those looking for a compromise between price and quality of service. But what exactly do the two stars mean and what standards must a hotel meet to receive them?

Is it worth paying attention to the stars?

In Poland, as in many other countries, the system of awarding stars to hotels is not regulated by a single, universal body. Instead, there are a number of different organisations and systems that are guided by different criteria, much of it optional, which further complicates the comparison of standard between different accommodation facilities.

Some hotels may be rated by international rating agencies, while others may be subject to local rating systems. In addition, some accommodation establishments self-determine their number of stars without independent verification, which can lead to inaccuracies and potential misleading of customers. This can make the star system appear ambiguous and complex.

Although the vast majority of 2-star hotels will offer a very similar standard, it is worth checking the room facilities and list of additional amenities before booking.

Technical standards

2-star hotels must meet certain technical requirements, such as the availability of mechanical ventilation and heating throughout the building, sanitary facilities with hot and cold water available 24 hours a day, as well as adaptation of lighting to the nature of the rooms. Lifts or escalators are required for buildings higher than four floors.

The size of the rooms is also strictly defined. The minimum area is 9 m² for a single room, 12 m² for a double room, 15 m² for a triple room and 18 m² for a quadruple room. For each additional person, the size of the room should be increased by 4.5 m².

Rooms

Each room should be equipped with a 90×200 cm (single) or 140×200 cm (double) bed. Nowadays, a TV and Internet access are also standard. In addition, we can assume that our room will include a bedside table with lamp, a desk with chair, and a chest of drawers or wardrobe.

Bathroom

When booking a room in a 2-star hotel, we can expect to have our own bathroom, equipped with at least a bathtub or shower cubicle, a washbasin, a toilet and basic accessories such as a mirror, soap and paper containers, towel racks and a soap dispenser. However, the issue of a private bathroom is worth checking before booking, as in older properties the minimum number of rooms with an en-suite bathroom may only be 50%. Towels and bed linen are usually changed every 3 days or at the guest's request.

Not everything is assessed

Guided by the number of stars, we should bear in mind aspects that are not included in the rating. These are, first and foremost, décor and location. An excellent location and modern interiors can significantly increase the attractiveness of a two-star hotel, making it an excellent choice for guests. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the rating of hotels also does not take into account the degree of automation and technological upgrades. This means that amenities such as an automated reception desk, the ability to check in via a mobile app or contactless room cards do not directly affect the stars awarded.

Additional services

Although services may be more limited than at higher-standard hotels, guests at 2-star hotels can expect facilities such as a 24/7 reception, continental or buffet breakfasts and access to tourist information.

When choosing a 2-star hotel, guests can expect first and foremost functionality and basic comfort. This is an ideal option for those looking for economical accommodation without sacrificing privacy and basic amenities.
