Easter in Silesia 2025 - tradition, joy and celebrating together

Easter in Silesia is an extraordinary time. It combines profound religiousness with the joy of experiencing the holiday together and care for regional traditions. The region's inhabitants not only cherish old customs, but are also keen to share them with others - organising unique events that unite generations and attract crowds. In 2025, Silesian towns and cities will once again be teeming with Easter life - from horse processions and the colourful blessing of food to water skirmishes and chocolate trips. Let's see what has been prepared this year!

Horse procession

One of the most distinctive Silesian customs is the Easter horse procession. Referred to locally as "rallying" or "riding behind God", it dates back to the 17th century and always takes place on Easter Monday. Its participants - often dressed in traditional costumes - tour the fields on horseback, praying for a harvest, blessing and protection from the elements. It is not only a spiritual experience, but also an important part of local identity. Importantly, the procession was added to the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2023.

In 2025, rallying will take place, among others, in Gliwice-Ostropa, in Bieńkowice and in Zawada Książęca. Each of these locations attracts not only local residents, but also tourists who watch this unique spectacle with interest. For many, it is one of the most moving and authentic Christmas events in the region.

Feasting of food in folk costumes in Nikisz

On Holy Saturday, 19 April, the blessing of food in Katowice's Nikiszowiec district will take place in a unique setting. At 12 noon, the faithful will gather in front of St Anne's Church to bring their holy baskets. Many people are dressed in traditional folk costumes on this day, which creates a unique atmosphere and emphasises the regional character of the event.

In addition, after the service, participants will be able to take part in an approximately 20-minute walk through the historic district, led by Grzegorz Frankie - President of the Upper Silesian Association. The meeting aims not only to cultivate traditions, but also to celebrate together and build bonds between residents.

"Great expedition for Czekojaja" in Chorzów

This year, there will also be no shortage of attractions for the youngest. On Saturday, 19 April, at 10:00 a.m., at the Municipal Stadium in Chorzów, there will be a "Great Expedition for Chocolate". This is an event where children will be able to search for chocolate eggs hidden by the Easter bunny Hazok. The organisers - the Centre for Intergenerational Integration and the Youth City Council - invite children with baskets and good humour.

The whole event is open to the public. It is not only about having fun, but also about showing that Christmas traditions can be passed on in an attractive and modern way. The shared exploration, the joy of the children and the family atmosphere create an unforgettable atmosphere on this morning.

"Great Water Battle" in Chorzów

Easter Monday is also a time for joy and laughter. In Chorzów - as in previous years - a great water battle will take place. The event is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. This time the fun will cover as many as seven locations in the city, and a mobile water base, i.e. a special water barrel, will allow everyone to replenish their ammunition supply.

The organisers encourage everyone to bring their own water pistols. This version of Śmigus-Dyngus is not only a return to the tradition of dousing with water, but first and foremost an integration of entire families, joyful competition and an opportunity to spend time together in the fresh air. The children have a lot of fun and the adults - if only for a moment - can feel like children again.

"Zorska Water Battle".

It will be equally loud and wet that day in Zory. There, in the Brickyard Park, another great water battle will begin at 12:00. The organisers from the Voluntary Fire Brigade invite everyone - children, young people and adults - to take part in the fun. All you need to do is bring your water gun or other paraphernalia and get ready for an hour full of laughter and spontaneous joy.

As well as being fun, this event also has a deeper meaning - it builds relationships and encourages people to spend time together. Besides, in a world full of screens and hectic schedules, there could hardly be a better excuse to get out of the house and have fun with neighbours, friends and family!
